1.) Create a checklist of things that need to be done.
- Ask a friend or family member if they can recommend a moving company or where to rent a moving vehicle.
- Start researching and receiving written estimates from moving companies unless you decide to move yourself, then reserve your moving truck/van.
- Ask about their insurance policy for your items.
- Make sure that the moving company knows everything you want them to take care of . ex: packing of mirrors, breakables, larger items that are fragile, a car needing to be transported etc....
- If you don't let them know what they will be doing aside from moving, this could change your estimate price considerably.
- Check the availability dates.
- Moving should not be based on the price of the estimates but the service you will receive.
2.) Reserve your moving company of choice (or moving vehicle).
PACKING TIPS: (start packing a month in advance)
- Start with rooms that are not being used. example ... attics, basements ....
- When you start to pack, start an inventory list of the items that are being packed.
- Tape boxes securely and label them according to room. example: kitchen - dishes (fragile)
- Try to distribute items in boxes from heavy to light to keep the boxes from getting too heavy.
- Do not pack flamables, sprays, gases, or propane items. Moving companies will not transport those items.
TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVE:
- Pick up address change forms from your local Post Office and complete them with your new address.
- Contact your electric, water, trash, newspaper carrier, phone company (keep your phone service on until after the move) and any other services you may have.

- Put aside things (clothing, personals, medication, things for your pet(s), toys for your child(ren) etc) you are going to need for your travels.
- Notify your auto and health insurance companies of your new address.
- Reserve service elevator(s) if you live in a highrise.
- Close your checking account and have monies transferred to the new account.
